To some, eating healthy can seem daunting. It can seem like a task that we know is important but we feel like we don’t know much about it. When we want food, we want it quick and easy so we turn to premade meals and processed food. Trust me, I can relate. But remember this, you can’t outwork a bad diet. It would be nice if we could, but we can’t.

That’s why having some healthy eating tips you can fall back on can be so important for implementing habits that help you live a healthier, happier life.

Why you should start eating a healthy diet

Eating a healthy diet has incredible benefits, from losing weight to preventing cancer, a healthy diet could solve your health problems.

A well balanced, whole foods diet can decrease your chances of developing cancer, it will improve brain health and function, decrease your chances of developing diabetes and obesity, and will also prevent heart disease.

Sound too good to be true? It’s not!

Follow these simple steps to eating a healthier diet so you can be on track to living your best life.

Drink more waterHealthy Eating Tips - Drink More Water

Drinking more water should always be the first step to getting your diet on track. Water isn’t just amazing for your body, skin, and organs though. Studies show that if you drink a glass of water before each meal, it helps fill you up so you won’t be eating as much.

If water isn’t your kind of thing, try soda water or sparkling water and add your own fruit to it to start getting adapted to it. The best way to remind yourself to drink more water throughout the day is to keep a bottle of water in front of you. Depending on your physical activity level and temperature outside, you may have to drink more water one day and less another.

Incorporate more vegetables

Starting a healthy diet should not consist of you throwing out every unhealthy food item in your house. You can still enjoy foods that you love and make them healthier. How do you do that? By adding more vegetables to your plate!

If you enjoy eating a slice of pizza, add on some peppers, mushrooms, onions, or arugula and tomatoes. The week after, try doing a cauliflower crust or whole wheat crust. It’s always fun to experiment with new foods (if you have the time), but I would suggest sticking to foods you know and slowly incorporating new foods. Eating healthy won’t be enjoyable if you don’t like what you eat. So when you’re enjoying foods you love, make sure half of your plate is filled with vegetables and less of the other food.

Eat your carbs!

Carbohydrates are key to filling you up and staying energized, especially when you’re working out! But don’t get confused about the carbohydrates, there are good ones and bad ones.

The good:

  • Sweet potatoes, squash, high fiber beans and legumes

  • Whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, barley)

  • Fruits (apples with skin, mango, strawberries)

The bad:

  • White flour (breads, pastas)

  • White sugar

  • Processed foods

Incorporating GOOD carbs into your diet will keep you feeling fuller for longer so you don’t have to worry about those late-night binges after dinner.

Cut back on sugar

It would be nice to cut sugar out altogether since it is the leading cause of diabetes, but it’s hard to do when learning how to adopt a healthy lifestyle. One of the best healthy eating tips we can recommend is to try to minimize the amount of added sugar you’re consuming in your life.

In order to cut back on sugar think about what you eat and what it can be swapped out with. Always look at the nutrition label when buying food, just because the front says something about no sugar, it’s best to look at the nutrition label at the added sugar amount. If there is added sugar, put it back on the shelf. We don’t need any added sugar in our diets!

  • Swap out soda for unsweetened tea

  • Swap out the candy bar for fruit or fruit covered in dark chocolate

  • Sweetened yogurt can be swapped for plain Greek yogurt and you can add your own fruit or honey

  • Instead of buying fruit juices, make your own! It’s super simple to squeeze a fresh orange into a glass for fresh orange juice.
